Mitchell Point Tunnel today is part of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. The new tunnel opened to the public for non-motorized vehicles and pedestrian use on March 21, 2025. Motorized vehicles are prohibited.
The original tunnel was constructed in 1915. It was in service for motor traffic until 1953 when it was closed for safety reason. In 1964, the original tunnel was demolished to make way for US 30/I-80N (now I-84) freeway.
