The PDX Adult Soapbox Derby, where art, engineering, and silliness all combine into one in a gravity-powered race.
The groups of three start at the top of Mt. Tabor, an extinct volcano in the Portland (Oregon) city limits, try (emphasis on TRY) to race to the bottom for a finish in a timed race. Some soapbox cars will zip by in a blink of an eye like an Olympic bobsled. Others roll by like a slow drive in the park (literally). One team stalled on a curve and a team member had to get out and push.
A few crashes had occurred on the course, but all were out of my sight. One crash apparently was severe enough that the race was delayed for nearly an hour. I don’t have the details on that other than medics were summoned. I hope person or team are all alright.
Today was just a fun photo outing at an event. I was at zone 10 inside the curve on the slope. Spectators were not allowed on the outer edge of the curve in case a soapbox car left the track. Crashing into a spectator would not be good.
