After 66 years serving Portland area shoppers, Lloyd Center mall closed permanently. The last skaters cleared off the ice. Joe Brown’s Carmel Corn is scooping up the last of their caramel popcorn. Visitors left one final note on the walls.
I’ve been to Lloyd Center since I was a child. The mall was still an outdoor mall. It had the ice rink. Of course, Joe Brown’s Carmel Corn. To me, I remember the candy at Meier and Frank’s (later Macy’s).
In the past decade, the mall’s business stared to dwindle. Nordstrom had left, then later other anchor stores started to leave. Most of the tenants had left, including the food court. The mall was fading, and I don’t believe it was the trend of malls simply going away. Clackamas Town Center and Washington Square are still going strong.
Lloyd Center was a place that most people neglected to patronize. It was a ghost town. Until its final day.
