A volcano with valley and trees during morning sunrise light.

Morning Volcano

Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Washington. April 14, 2025.

The volcanic sleeping beauty basking in the morning alpenglow. I personally like the warm, soft morning light over the harsh shadow from the west rim casting onto the east rim of last night. One downside with early morning photos is that it’s a gamble with the sky conditions, not knowing the clouds in the darkness of the night. The lighting was just right this morning to use a fast shutter speed since it was windy.

I tried some photo shots last night, too. I spotted problem number 1 while driving to a location and that was the shadow casting onto the east interior rim.

Also, as for the trees, the area has been in the making for the past 45 years. Trees are making their way to partially block the view of the volcano.

Johnston Ridge remains closed from the slide May 14, 2023.
